The granite sections of the mill were built by Sylvanus Holbrook in 1852. Scythes were first mass produced here. During the Civil War the facilities were expanded and used to make bayonets for the Union Army. After the war the Whitin family produced woolen cloth here until 1910. The Kupfer Brothers began to produce specialty coated papers subsequent to the Whitin's. In 1979 the mill was restored and began produce steel wire for commercial, fishing, farming, agricultural and industrial use.
