This freestanding arch off the Oxley Highway is for the entry road to Apsley Falls, a pair of waterfalls (65 m and 58 m high), about a kilometre away, in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.

While the native Australians had been in this area for millenia the falls were 'discovered' by Lt. John Oxley (Royal Navy), on 13th September, 1818, after crossing the river in order to get further east down the river. The falls stopped their progress.
