Sabre Mark V 23228 first flew in 1954. It saw service with No 1 (F) OTU RCAF Stn Chatham, 414 Sqn as part of 4(F) Wing, Baden Soellingen, Germany.

23228 was again transfereed to Chatham, this time as a pool aircraft with the Sabre Transition Unit, training pilots on the new CF104.

23228 was tranferred to CFB Borden as an instructional aid, and eventual preservation and display.

F86 Sabre

The F86 Sabre was the premiere swept-wing
fighter interceptor during the 1950's. The RCAF flew
1154 Sabres(Mark 1 through Mark 6) built by Canadair
Limitee with the first, and only Mark 1 flying on 8
August, 1950. During the next 20 years the F-86s
accumulated a total of 925,667 flying hours.

The highly successful aerobatic display team, the
famous "Golden Hawks" flew Mark 5 Sabres. They were
formed in 1959 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
powered flight in Canada. Before being disbanded in
February 1964, the Golden Hawks completed 317
performances.

The Mark 6 Sabre (390 flown by the RCAF) was powered
by the Orenda"14" engine, which generated 7,440
pounds of thrust. Other characteristics included:

thousands of Canadians who built, maintained
and flew the Sabre.
