Built in 1852 by Moses Taft and first produced indigo blue goods for officers and suitings. All the goods were purchased by the US government and used for the soldiers in the Civil War. The complex is made up of various buildings that were built over a 75 year period. It was powered by water from the former Blackstone Canal that closed to commercial traffic in 1848. The water was diverted from the lower portion of the canal beneath the main building. The tail race fed into Hecla Pond which allowed the water to be used a second time to provide power to the Hecla Mill. As late as 1913 the mill maintained a 212 hp water wheel which provided much of the power needed by the mill. In 1865 steam power was added. The mill was purchased by Arthur Wheelock and renamed Stanley Woolen Company.
