With an area of 1,069 km², Hienghène is one of new Caledonia's largest communes. Established in 1887, Hienghène is located 400km north of the capital, Noumèa. It is a territory of the Hootwaidan Ma Wathabeen customary region and has a population of over 2,2000, most of whom live in tribal areas. More than half the population lives off subsistence farming, fishing and hunting.
With its rockface formations, such as the Brooding Hen and the Lindèralique Rocks, its tropical vegetation, valleys and rivers, including the Tiouandè, Hienghène, Tanghène and OuiaHème, mountains such as Mt Paniè, a botanical reserve rising to 1,069m, beaches and islands, Hienghène has one of New Caledonia's most varied landscapes.
This look-out is about 1km north of Hienghène township and offers amazing views in each direction of this incredibly beautiful coastline as well as fantastic views of "La Poule", quite possibly one of the most photographed locations in New Caledonia outside of Noumèa.
