The large plume of smoke that came billowing off the observation deck of the CN Tower Thursday evening was caused by a fireworks rehearsal for Pan Am Games opening ceremony, organizers said.
“We can confirm that fireworks were set off from the CN Tower this evening as a part of the dress rehearsal for the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony. This was announced earlier today in our press conference at the Main Media Centre at CIBC Pan Am Park,” Toronto 2015 spokesperson Heather Irwin said in an email.
Despite the warning, many Torontonians were still caught off-guard by the sight of smoke coming off the city’s iconic building, with many posting photos to Twitter. Users could see the smoke from as far away as Scarborough.
Toronto Fire said they were aware of the rehearsal but had “no idea of the volume of smoke” that it would produce."
