Along Rue Charles Buls, under the loggia of L’Etoile, a restored guild house directly next to Hôtel de Ville, the 1905 Art Nouveau monument to Everard ’t Serclaes can be found. Designed by Jules Dillens, (1849–1904) local tradition tells us that the figure of Everard ’t Serclaes brings luck and that the wishes of all who touch it are granted. Tourists and locals alike rub Serclaes’s figure, keeping the brass highly polished, compared to the rest of the memorial. Other parts are also touched frequently by the tourists such as the face of an angel, a dog, and one of the shields.

When Duke John III of Brabant died on 5.December.1355, his daughter Joanna and her husband, Wenceslaus, succeeded him. Louis de Male, Count of Flanders disagreed with this line of succession. Louis invaded the Duchy of Brabant, seizing Brussels. The count occupied the city, hoping to force Duchess Jeanne, to cede it to him.

Overnight of 24.October.1356, Everard ’t Serclaes (1320-1388), Lord of the Manor of Cruyckembourg near Ternat, lead a group of Brabant patriots. They scaled the walls of the city and drove out the Flemings. Duchess Joanna and her husband Duke Wenceslaus made a joyous entry into a free Brussels.

Following his heroic deed, Everard was made a city schepen (alderman) five times. He was assassinated because he defended the city’s rights against the Lord of Gaasbeek.
