Cette fontaine en fonte de fer est située au centre d’un grand bassin peint. Il s’agit d’une fontaine jaillissante à deux bassins superposés. La colonne la plus basse, qui supporte le grand bassin, et la colonne au-dessus, qui supporte le petit bassin, sont décorées de feuilles d’acanthe, dont certaines sont stylisées. La fontaine comprend également un socle.
Commandé par catalogue de la fonderie J. L. Mott Iron Works de New York, ce type de fontaine avait la particularité de laisser l’acheteur choisir les divers morceaux qui étaient ensuite assemblés pour finalement constituer une composition personnalisée. Deux exemplaires de ces éléments patrimoniaux font partie de la collection d’œuvres d’art public de la Ville de Montréal : la fontaine du square Sir-George-Étienne-Cartier et la fontaine du square Saint-Louis.
À compter de 1850, la fontaine était présentée dans la partie est du square Viger. Elle était alors connue comme la fontaine Lacroix du square Viger. En 1931, le prolongement de la rue Berri entraîne la relocalisation de la fontaine sur son emplacement actuel, le square Saint-Louis.

This cast iron fountain is in the center of a large painted basin. This is a gushing fountain with two superimposed basins. The lower column that supports the large basin and the column above, which supports a smaller basin, are decorated with acanthus leaves, some of which are stylized. The fountain also includes a pedestal.
Ordered by catalog from the foundry JL Mott Iron Works of New York, this fountain had the characteristic to let the purchaser choose the various pieces which were then assembled to ultimately be a personal composition. Two copies of these heritage elements are part of the collection of public art in the City of Montreal: the fountain square Sir George-Étienne Cartier and the fountain of Saint-Louis Square.
Beginning in 1850 the fountain was presented in the eastern part of Square Viger. It was known as the Viger Square Lacroix fountain. In 1931, the extension of Berri leads the relocation of the fountain to its present location, the Square Saint-Louis.
