Programme on Man and the Biosphere by decision of the Bureau of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere, approved for this purpose by the Council. It is certified that Mont Saint Hilaire is part of the international network of Biosphere Reserves. This network, consisting of protected areas representing the major global ecosystem types, aims the conservation of nature and scientific research in the service of man. It will serve as a reference system to measure human impacts on the environment.

Located about 32 km east of Montreal, Mont Saint-Hilaire is a steep-sided circular formation rising some 250 meters above the Saint Lawrence plain. It comprises one of the last remnants of old growth deciduous forest in Quebec and hosts many rare and endangered species. The biosphere reserve is located near a major urban region of some 3.5 million people. Increasing urban development around Mont Saint-Hilaire and a growing number of visitors has led to the multiplication of human disturbances (e.g. illicit trails) and fragmentation of the forest which once covered the entire Richelieu Valley. Tourism and agriculture are important contributors to the economies of the five towns which are part of the transition area.
The protection of the greenbelt and forest corridors which surround Mount Saint-Hilaire is one of the main goals of the biosphere reserve. Since 1972, the Mont Saint-Hilaire Nature Centre - a non-profit organization - has worked in conjunction with McGill University’s Gault Nature Reserve as well as local communities and stakeholders towards the conservation of the mountain.
Owners of apple orchards are thus aided by the Nature Centre and McGill University in order to find sound agricultural and economic approaches to ensure the integrity of the greenbelt that surrounds the mountain. With the same purpose, stewardship activities are undergone with landowners. Research has been carried out by the Mc Gill University, which owns the site since 1958.

Situé à environ 32 km à l'est de Montréal, Mont-Saint-Hilaire est une formation encaissée circulaire à quelque 250 mètres au-dessus de la plaine du Saint-Laurent. Il comprend l'un des derniers vestiges de la vieille forêt de feuillus de la croissance au Québec et abrite de nombreuses espèces rares et menacées. La réserve de biosphère est situé près d'une région urbaine majeure de quelque 3,5 millions de personnes. Accroître le développement urbain autour du Mont Saint-Hilaire et un nombre croissant de visiteurs a conduit à la multiplication des perturbations humaines (par exemple illicites sentiers) et la fragmentation de la forêt qui couvrait autrefois toute la vallée du Richelieu. Tourisme et l'agriculture sont d'importants contributeurs à l'économie des cinq villes qui font partie de la zone de transition.
La protection de la ceinture de verdure et de forêt qui entourent le mont Saint-Hilaire est l'un des principaux objectifs de la réserve de biosphère. Depuis 1972, le Centre de la Nature du mont Saint-Hilaire - une organisation à but non lucratif - a travaillé en collaboration avec la Réserve naturelle Gault de l'Université McGill ainsi que les communautés locales et les parties prenantes à la conservation de la montagne. Les propriétaires de vergers de pommiers sont ainsi aidés par le Centre de la Nature et de l'Université McGill afin de trouver des approches agricoles et économiques solides pour assurer l'intégrité de la ceinture verte qui entoure la montagne. Avec le même objectif, les activités d'intendance avec les propriétaires fonciers sont subies. La recherche a été menée par l'Université Mc Gill, qui est propriétaire du site depuis 1958.
