"The highest point in the park is represented by the Monolith, that raises up on the Monolith Plateau. This huge monument includes 121 figures with a total height of about 17 metres. The Monolith was graved in one single stone, of granite. This splendid art represent the eternal life cycle, offering an magnificent view over the figures of human that are holding one by one. In 1947 on the Monolith Plateau started the installation of the 36 figures. Vigeland started to work on these granite sculptures when the First War started and he finished his work in 1936. The access to the Monolith Plateau is made by eight gates that are describing the man in different ages. The Wheel of life was modeled and designed by the artist between 1933-1934. This Maestic wheel represents the symbol of eternity, described by the children, women and men holding each other. This sculpture is the main theme of the park: the journey of the man, living different impression and sensations, going through happiness, grief, sadness, fantasy, from hope to the wishes of eternity."
