Crews responded to the fire at 30 D Street, a six-unit apartment building, just after 4:30 a.m.

Flames were seen shooting through the roof of the apartment building.

Resident Jeff Barr said he was asleep when his girlfriend alerted him to the fire.

"I ran down the stairs, I looked up at the stairwell and you could see flames going straight up there," Barr said. "I just started banging on the doors trying to get everybody out."

All the residents of the building, 14 adults and seven children, made it out safely before firefighters arrived at the scene. All 21 were displaced as a result of the fire.

Northbridge Fire Department Deputy Chief Steven Dupre said three firefighters were injured battling the blaze, one with a shoulder injury and the others with high blood pressure.

"The challenge was the wires so close to the building,"Dupre said. "Cars were parked on the side of the road and we had a hard time getting ladders into the rear of the building."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
