“As you look from Point Imperial’s vista, you command the highest viewpoint in the park, at 8,803 feet (2,684 M). The very view is different here. There is no visible basement rock in the rock layers – the river has not cut that deeply yet. Prominent in the middle view are the Supergroup of rocks, the middle rock layers of the canyon, often absent or obscure. The distant Marble Platform is a 2,700 foot (820 m) step down from Point Imperial. Though not visible in the view, as the raven flies, you are nearly seven miles (11 km) removed from the Colorado River. The river meanders its course more than a mile (1.6 km) below this elevation.”
