This plaque indicates the position of the Willich's Brigade at 1 pm on Saturday, September 19 during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The background is blue indicating the was a Federal unit. There are 8 plaques on the battlefield about Willich’s Brigade.

Wikipedia provides the following about August Willich
"August Willich (November 19, 1810–January 22, 1878), born Johann August Ernst von Willich, was a military officer in the Prussian Army and a leading early proponent of Communism in Germany. In 1847 he discarded his title of nobility. He later immigrated to the United States and became a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War."

To reach the plaque:
Park on Battleline Road near the Texas State monument. Follow the path south east of Battleline Road past the Texas Monument. The tablet for Willich's Brigade will be on the side of the path. The main path continues on to Brotherton Road.

The brigade, with Baldwin’s on its left, and Dodge’s in reserve reached this position about 1 O’clock P.M. Sept. 19th, and became heavily engaged with troops of Cheatham’s Division. After two hours of severe fighting the enemy withdrew to the high ground beyond Winfrey House. When the contest opened Dodge’s Brigade moved up on the right. And at 3 O’clock the Union line had been advanced to the immediate vicinity of Winfrey’s.

Short Significance Description:

The metal markers and tablets contribute to the national significance of the park under NR criterion A as part of the War Department's efforts to mark and commemorate places of significant action during the battles.

Short Physical Description

Approximately 700 metal position and descriptive markers with raised lettering. Union marker text painted blue; Confederate marker text painted red.


Long Physical Description

Most of these tablets and plaques have integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmenship, feeling, and association to the historically significant period of Commemorative/Park Developement (1895-1899).
