This tunnel on the Camas Prairie Railroad was constructed in the early 1900s and is one of seven on the line. The horseshoe shape was necessitated by the loopback in the line required to maintain grade as the canyon became steeper. Although the current status of the line is "inactive", talk is of the possiblity of reactivating this branch of the railroad so check locally for the latest status before entering this tunnel. A 50-ft climb up a steep and slippery path is required but this unique tunnel is worth the scramble. Be very cautious walking from the parking area on the busy highway to the tunnel entrance.
