The 1812 Cemetery is located along the Eastern promenade below Quebec Street in Portland, ME. An inscribed boulder marks the mass grave of 21 21 prisoners of war who died during the War of 1812.

On December 23, 1812 the British warship HMS Regulus was travelling between Quebec and Boston with American soldiers that wee taken prisoner at the Battle of Queenstown Heights, Ontario. The ship landed in Portland under a flag of truce. Among the prisoners was Lt. Colonel Winfield Scott, later to become known as “Old Fuss and Feathers.”
Many of the prisoners aboard were sick with from malnutrition and disease. Twenty-four of the most severely ill were brought to the Town Hospital. Twenty-one of these prisoners subsequently died and were buried in a mass grave at what is now the Promenade.
A boulder is the center of the site is inscribed:
