The feat was featured on the cover of the 1983 edition of the Guinness Book of Records. It was accomplished by Gary Sowerby from September 6th to November 19th, 1980, in a Volvo station wagon. The trip started and ended in Toronto, ON and took 74 days to complete.

Though the timeline in the book indicates a time of 74 days for the journey, "Around the world in 77 days" is painted on the car. Strange.

The record has since been broken several times, with the time having been reduced to under 40 days.
