Charles Yelverton O'Connor CMG was born on January 11th, 1843 in Gravelmount, Castletown, County Meath, Ireland . In 1864 he migrated to New Zealand where in 1890 he became the country's Marine Engineer. In 1891 he nad his family came to Western Australia as Engineer-in-Chief of the State.
He was responsible for the construction of Fremantle Harbour and the Goldfields Water Supply , both projects his opponents claimed would be failures,. His is best known for his work on the Goldfields Water Pipeline, which carries water from Mundaring Weir ,east of Perth , 530km to Kalgoorlie using 8 pumping stations to deliver 23megalitres of water through 760mm pipe,
O'Connor took his own life by shooting himself on 10 March 1902 after riding his horse into the water at Robb Jetty, south of Fremantle.
