A larger than life bronze sculpture of Major-General Robert Clive.
Stands on a 10 feet high polished granite plinth, it bears the simple inscription 'CLIVE' in faded gold letters.
The General is wearing an overcoat with full military braid, briches, stockings. He is posed with right arm crooked, hand on hip, His left arm relaxed holding his Tricorn hat.
I could not get a full length photo of the statue due to the Market stalls that had been erected around the Statue. It would be appreciated if anyone visiting on a non market day could post a photo of Clive & the Plinth he stands on.
"Major-General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive, KB MP FRS (29 September 1725 – 22 November 1774), also known as Clive of India, was a British officer and soldier of fortune who established the military and political supremacy of the East India Company in Bengal. He is credited with securing India, and the wealth that followed, for the British crown. Together with Warren Hastings he was one of the key early figures in the creation of British India. He also sat for two boroughs as a Tory Member of Parliament in Great Britain.
Recent historians have credited him for atrocities and the subsequent pillage of treasures that occurred in Bengal and India due to high taxation laws he instituted and forced cultivation of crops such as opium resulting in famines." Text Source: (
