Developer Sam Mizrahi is proposing an 80-storey tower mixing upscale condo units and retail at the intersection of Yonge and Bloor Sts. — a development which would become the city’s second-tallest structure.

Mizrahi unveiled his vision for the former Stollerys store and adjacent lands on the intersection’s southwest corner on March 11, 2015 at a presentation at the Park Hyatt hotel.

The proposed 318-metre structure would be second only to the CN Tower, which stands 553 metres high.

Mizrahi told the (Toronto) Star it will be built by Foster + Partners of London.

“There will be 560 residential units that can be custom designed to your expectations because there will be no columns or pillars — we are using an exoskeleton construction,” Mizrahi said.

John Caliendo, co-president of the area’s resident association, expressed concern over the potential shadow impact and the possibility of wind tunnels, but Mizrahi said the proposed building falls underneath the incremental shadow of the area’s currently existing buildings, while the exoskeleton design is intended to minimize and mitigate wind.

For 114 years, 1 Bloor St. W. was home to Stollerys, which displayed “British and European inspired garments for men and women of taste” on four floors. Workers demolished the store’s familiar façade earlier in the year, thwarting an effort begun just days before by Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam to have the building designated a heritage site.
