This area was originally part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribal lands. It was opened to white settlement with the Land Run of 1892 and the town of Geary was established. Farming and agriculture was the mainstay and four wells and public troughs were built between 1899-1901. This was a significant part of the town's planning and this trough is located in the commercial portion of Geary, which housed the cotton gin, feed stores and grain elevator.
This well was drilled in 1901 and is the only one extant. It originally had a windmill and hand pump which were removed in 1903. In the second decade of the 1900's, the well was capped and may have gone dry during a particularly dry time in history. In the 1920's, the wood trough was replaced with a concrete one. The trough was disconnected from the well and connected to the city water works. The trough was used until just after World War II when the use of horse-drawn vehicles diminished. An indentation in the trough, made it possible for teams of horses to be watered without being unharnessed.
Today, the trough stands as a reminder of the town's early reliance on agricultural endeavors, and the town's foresight and planning to meet the water needs.
