The tower was built in 1953 for the Korps Luchtwachtdienst (KLD).
The KLD initially really wanted to build a tower on top of the ground of Goyarts and Zn at the Merneweg 46-48 in Wehe-den Hoorn, but the owner did not cooperate with it.
Then the air watchtower was built at Baron Van Asbeckweg. The tower is of type 13.92 (total height 15.44 m) and is constructed of precast concrete honeycomb construction elements.
On top of the tower's viewing platform, which consists of an open space of 3 by 3 meters with a 1.5 meter high parapet. On the northwest side of the viewing platform is covered hidden niche.
The tower formed a triangle (air guard circuit) with the air watchtowers in Warffum North (gone) and Bedum (remainder still present). Observers reported to the air guard center in Groningen. The tower was used until 1968, the year in which the Corps Air Guard duty is finally canceled in the northern regions.
