Taking Washington's State Route 542 from Bellingham you eventually start following the North Fork of the Nooksack River. This route is already scenic, however at Glacier it becomes a route nestled among tall mountains.
As the highway leaves Glacier it becomes the Mt Baker National Forest Scenic Byway and the Glacier Public Service Center has rangers giving out the latest information on the many hiking opportunities.
The Glacier Public Service Center also serves as a small natural history museum explaining the flora and fauna of the Nooksack River Valley, but also of the massive volcano - Mt Baker - and it shaped the landscape.
This is a good place to stop to get the latest information and to know where you need a parking pass to leave your car before venturing out to explore this incredible scenic area.
