State Route 542 is both a State Scenic Highway and National Forest Scenic Byway winding its way up the North Fork of the Nooksack River. This corridor is a popular destination for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and others who want to venture out into the wilderness.

At at the National Forest Service's Glacier Public Service Center stands Smokey Bear with shovel in hand. His face familiar to generations of Americans he lets you know how the forests are doing during the summer months when it is hot and dry.

In his own way this section of the northernmost Cascades in the United States is protected under Smokey's watchful eye and his shovel to put out wildfires.
