"Nighthawk" is a life sized bronze sculpture of a chicken hawk, sculpted by Paul Rhymer, known for his work with animals and birds. We all know the well-known theme from the musical "Oklahoma!" - Hawks making lazy circles in the sky.... John Ross Elementary has a before and after school activities program called Nighthawk Hangout.
This sculpture was purchased by the John Ross Elementary PTO in commemoration of their 25 years of service to the school district. The hawk is in the process of landing, with its wings unfurled up and back, and its claws stretched out to make contact with the ground. His body is leaning to the right, as he swoops down to land.
The nighthawk is preparing to land on a concrete pillar. At the base of this base, a bronze plaque reads:
