Originally the monument honoured two police detectives who were brutally murdered while investigating a gold theft in Kalgoorlie, since 1929 the names of fallen police oficers and police assistants were added to the statue, but are now the names are engraved on marble tablets attached to the wall behind the statue.
The Police Memorial (commonly known as the Pitman-Walsh memorial) was unveiled on December 8th 1929 at a ceremony outside the Police Barracks in James Street, Perth , the statue was moved in 1976 when the new WA Police Headquarters at East Perth was opened. in 2002 the monument was moved to its present location at the Joondalup Police Academy. It is adjacent to the chapel and also close to a wall bearing the names of scores of WA police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
