The plaque commemorates the arrival of the ship "Rockingham" in 1830. The Rockingham ,after which the townsite was named, arrived in heavy weather on the afternoon of 13 May 1830, but due to the heavy weather the ship drifted out of control and ran aground, broadside on. Miraculously all managed to make it to shore without loss of life.
The wall the plaque is attached to is made from the ballast of ships that called at the Port of Rockingham to load timber during the late 19th and early 20th centuries
Age/Event Date: 14th May 1830, 28th May 1971
