Both of these outhouses have wood interiors, cobbled together crudely with corrugated tin. There is no distinction as to whether or not one or the other is for men or for women. The one closest to the headstones is falling apart, its two seats atop rotting wood, and a section of the roof is down and on the ground. The more usable of the two is in the corner of the cemetery. It also has two seats, and looks like it has been upgraded: Both seats are atop what looks to be newer wood. The door into the outhouse scrapes the floor, so visitors will need to lift it up a bit. Be careful during warm weather, as all kinds of critters will make their homes inside, and here, you'll want to bring your own roll.
Location:
A Texas Historical Marker provides some background: Martha and John Pate Carter brought their family to Van Zandt County about 1851 and were among the first settlers in this area. Although local oral tradition holds that the first person buried in the cemetery was a nine-year-old son of the Carters, the oldest documented grave is that of H.H. Meeks (d.1859). The Carter family later donated the land for a public cemetery, and the burial ground has served residents of a number of small communities in this area. A cemetery association formed in the 1960s maintains the historic graveyard.
