The Texas Historical Marker at the front of Carter Cemetery, south of Canton, TX, indicates that H.H. Meeks has the oldest documented grave in the cemetery, dating to 1859.

The historical marker provides the background:
Martha and John Pate Carter brought their family to Van Zandt County about 1851 and were among the first settlers in this area. Although local oral tradition holds that the first person buried in the cemetery was a nine-year-old son of the Carters, the oldest documented grave is that of H.H. Meeks (d.1859). The Carter family later donated the land for a public cemetery, and the burial ground has served residents of a number of small communities in this area. A cemetery association formed in the 1960s maintains the historic graveyard.

Mr. Meeks's stone grave marker has been worn by the time and elements. At the top of it is "Farewell" above a set of clasped hands, which usually suggests marriage, and below that is "Brother". The stone is broken where the epitaph is, but it appears to say something along the lines of "Death is ... us from the cares of earth." Maybe "to save us." Below is:
