The Hitchock Memorial gateway are at the northern entrance to Johnstone Park and were erected in 1925 as a tribute to noted civic leader, the hon. Howard Hitchcock, Mayor of Geelong in 1917-1922. The classical design is derived from the architecture of the English Renaissance.
Howard Hitchcock was one of Geelong`s most public spirited citizens from a family noted for its benefactions to worthy causes. Howard was born and raised in Geelong and spent his entire life in this town.
An inscription on one of the pillars reads:-
The Citizens` tribute to
the
Hon. Howard Hitchcock
C.M.G., O.B.E., M.L.C.,
Mayor of Geelong
1917-1922
