So named because the locals thought only a lunatic would use open cut methods in an area pot holed with opal mine shafts. It became the richest opal bearing area on the fields, with one opal node alone valued at $6 million.
The You Are Here map is on Lunatic Hill Lookout & outlines efforts to rehabilitate the open cut mine. Portions of the open cut were filled in by stockpiled rock. The remainder was left untouched as "preserved fields" in recognition of its unique heritage, scientific, tourism & landscape values.
