This Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia gylptostroboides) “Gold Rush” has been recently planted at the Iowa Arboretum and is just getting a start on its growth. It is presently about 15’ tall and is surrounded by large majestic pines in the coniferous section behind the Hughes Education Center. It was given to the Iowa Arboretum in memory of Claudette McPherson. The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset every day and there is a charge of $5 per car. The education center is open 8:30-4:30 spring through fall. I found a book in the gift shop about Sequoia trees with a small section on the Dawn Redwood.
