St Ambrose is a Peace Memorial church having been built with funds raised locally & from a gift of £1,200 from the City of Bournemouth in England. Bournemouth’s gift had been given after the Great War as a peace offering to the town in the Empire outside England which had a good Church and War-service record. The gift to Gilgandra is a reflection of the notoriety obtained by the town after the establishment of recruitment marches (the Coo-ee March) there in 1915. Men determined to enlist in the First World War marched from Gilgandra to Sydney recruiting 300 along the way.
