To commemorate West Virginia’s participation in the Vicksburg Campaign, the state decided to honor Major Arza Goodspeed with a memorial bust. The memorial was sculpted by Aristide B. Cianfarani.

“The state memorial for West Virginia represents the 4th West Virginia Infantry, and commemorates the regiment's commander, Major Arza M. Goodspeed. It is located on Union Avenue south of Graveyard Road.”
For the siege’s sesquicentennial, an information banner accompanied the monument with further information:
“The West Virginia State Memorial commemorates the 4th West Virginia Infantry and Maj. Azra Goodspeed, who was killed during the assault on the Confederate defenses on May 19, 1863. This was the only West Virginia unit to participate in the Campaign and Siege of Vicksburg, and suffered 156 casualties during the conflict. The Memorial was dedicated on November 14, 1922.”
