Jeráb brek (Sorbus torminalis) je listnatý strom dosahující výšky až 25 metru.


Strom vyrustá do výšky 15 až 25 metru, prumer kmenu muže dosáhnout až 1,3 metru. Dožívá se až trí set let, nevytvárí však souvislé porosty. Jeho drevo se nekdy využívá pro výrobu dechových nástroju, napr. fléten.

Borka je hladká a šedavá, odlupuje se v približne ctvercových dílech; po odpadnutí se objevuje hnedavé zabarvení kmene. Listy mají špicaté laloky a dosahují délky 6 až 14 centimetru. Bílé peticetné kvety o prumeru 10 až 15 milimetru vytvárejí laty o velikosti 5 až 12 centimetru. Kvety jsou oboupohlavné, opylované hmyzem. Plodem je malvice o velikosti 1 až 1,5 cm. Plody jsou po dozrání hnedé a teckované, jsou jedlé (v primereném množství pokud nejsou horké) a chutí pripomínají datle.

Je rozšíren ve vetší cásti Evropy od Anglie a Walesu po Polsko, dále se vyskytuje v severozápadní Africe, jihovýchodní Asii, pohorí Alborz a na Kavkaze.

Jeráb brek (Sorbus torminalis) is a deciduous tree reaching a height of 25 meters.


The tree grows to a height of 15-25 meters, diameter of trunk can reach up to 1.3 meters. It can live up to three hundred years, but does not create continuous growth. Its wood is sometimes used for the manufacture of wind instruments, for example. Flutes.

Bark is smooth and greyish, peeling off in approximately square panels; after falling appears brownish discoloration of the tribe. The leaves have pointed lobes and reach a length of 6-14 cm. Pentamerous white flowers with a diameter 10 to 15 mm form a panicle size from 5 to 12 cm. The flowers are bisexual, pollinated by insects. Pome fruit is about the size of 1 to 1.5 cm. The fruits are brown when ripe and spotted, they are edible (in reasonable quantities and if they are not bitter) and flavors reminiscent of woodpeckers.

It is widespread in most of Europe from England and Wales to Poland, also occurs in northwestern Africa, Southeast Asia, Alborz Mountains and the Caucasus.
