The Gorge Walk is a gradual walk along Carnarvon Creek which has eroded the surrounding sandstone cliffs to form a deep gorge.

I chose the Moss Garden, Amphitheatre, Ward's Canyon & Art Gallery walk which is 14 kilometres return & takes approx. 6 hours. You walk through the gorge & along the way there are side tracks to each of these natural features, with the Art Gallery being one of the best examples of Aboriginal stencil art in Australia.
The track is a gradual incline which crosses Carnarvon Creek on numerous occasions via natural stepping stones. Some of these wobble, some are under water slightly so take care. If you slip the water is only shallow. The track itself is a mixture of gravel, loose sand & stony sections.
The side track to the Moss Garden is easy & the solitude & calming affect of the ferns, moss & falling water is well worth leaving to the last. The Amphitheatre is accessed via a set of steel steps & once inside it is like being in a very tall cylinder. Ferns grow on the floor & the sides of the amphitheatre have been scoured by fast flowing water, with horizontal & angled lines etched into the sandstone.
Ward's Canyon is more taxing with a steep set of steps (counted 156) leading to the canyon. You immediately notice a sharp decline in the temperature. It supports one of the world's largest ferns - the King Fern. It is the only place in inland Queensland where the ferns still survive.
As you are walking in a gorge the views are not of distant scenes but are never the less spectacular & the reasons why this National Park is so popular.
