The monument stands on the edge of the bluff above Catfish Creek and is historically identified as the grave of John Dubuque. It was erected in 1897. The monument was declared an National Historic Landmark in 1993

19. GRAVE OF JUIEN DUBUQUE, 1/2m. walk from end of R. Fork of Rowan St., is marked by a circular tower of Galena limestone, midieval in design, erected in 1897. Dubuque was buried by his Indian friend on this high bluff overlooking the Mississippi, the site of his long deserted "Mines of Spain"
