The church Mariä Himmelfahrt of Glis is one of the oldest and best known churches in the Canton of Valais. Its history dates back to the 5th or 6th century. It is located on a walled elevation in the town center. The area contains the church and a chapel that used to be an ossuary, the graves are placed all around those two buildings and on a small younger extension in the south.

In the southwest corner of the area is a special grave with a large marble headstone topped with a bronze replica of a Roman commander helmet. It is the grave of Karl Christian Erdmann von Le Coq, the commanding officer of the Royal Saxon army who died here in 1830 while traveling to Italy. The headstone inscription says:
"Carl Christian Erdmann
Edler von Le Coq
Commandierender General
der königl. sächsischen Armee
Gross Kreutz etc.
mehrerer Orden"
(Carl Christian Erdmann

several orders)
