The Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System has formed under a sandstone ridge which gives it great stability. With more than 400 miles of explored passageways, it is by far the longest known cave system in the world. The second- longest system, the Sac Actun underwater cave in Mexico, is not even half as long. Large parts of the cave are protected by a U.S. National Park.
