Billy Sing was born in Clermont on 2 March 1886 & prior to enlisting with the Fifth Light Horse Regiment, was a kangaroo shooter & prominent competition rifleman.
He served at Gallipoli (First World War) as a sniper of considerable distinction & renown. Whilst officially credited with accounting for 150 Turkish troops, his actual tally was probably 200. He also saw service in France & Belgium. For his meritorious work he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Belgian Croix de Guerre.
The Billy Sing Memorial in Clermont is a reconstruction of his bunker with sand bags, a 20 mm slit through which he could shoot & a figure complete with slouch hat. His story is described on a plaque behind the memorial.
