THE EXTRA MILE
Ida Wells-Barnett
1862-1931
Ida Wells-Barnett crusaded aggressively for civil rights
her entire life and was unafraid to exercise those rights
when customer and contrary to the law.
Involved in many civil rights causes, she
played leadership roles in the woman's
suffrage movement and in the founding
of the NAACP. Wells-Barnett became the
era's most outspoken crusader for ending
the practice of lynching African-Americans.
"I'd rather go down in history as
one lone Negro who dared
to tell the governments that
it had done a dastardly thing
then to save my skin by
taking back what
I have said."
