In 1809, a special statute of he Commonwealth of Massachusetts named Elnathan Baldwin as an original incorporator of the Agawam Cotton, Woolen and Linen Manufactory. He died near Hartford, CT when he was run over by the wheel of a loaded wagon, probably on company business.
A marble grave marker, decorated with a pot bellied urn within the tympanum, is inscribed:
In Memory of
Mr. Elnathan Baldwin
who was suddenly
killed by the wheel
of a loaded waggon
near Hartford
on the 13th July 1812
aged 40 years
