The sign is facing south west and is along the original route of U.S. 40. It features two paintings, on of which (the top one) includes the historic district of the town. The historic distinct is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bottom painting feature the Ellicott City Train Station, which is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the nearby bailey bridge. The sign was dedicated on the city's 225th birthday.
