Built in 1828, the single-arch stone bridge on Bridgewater Road carried the National Road.

The S-Bridge is a single arch structure with stones laid in an irregular ashlar fashion. It is about 185 feet long and rises about 18 feet from the waterline. The bridge traverses a rippling brook called Salt Fork. This bridge was part of the National Road, old Route 40.
The marker reads:
"S" Bridge
Old National Road Built about 1828
Where the road crossed a creek at an anlge, a stone arch bridge was built at right angles to the stream flow. "S" shaped walls were then built to guide the traffic around the jog from the direction of travel acorss the bridge and back onto the road line.
An arch parallel with the stream flown and in line with the road would have more difficult and costly to build.
