Here’s something you won’t see every day: S.F.’s Coit Tower is going yellow tonight.
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department will celebrate International Day of Happiness by lighting up the iconic landmark with “International Optimism Yellow,” a special color created by Pantone just for this occasion.
Never heard of International Day of Happiness?
It’s an annual “holiday” (first celebrated just two years ago) that was born out of the United Nations’ resolution to prioritize happiness.
According to the press release from SF Rec and Park, “social isolation is as potent a cause of early death as smoking; and the epidemic of loneliness is twice as deadly as obesity.”
To combat this, the United Nations has teamed up with organizations all over the world to spread the message that being happy keeps you healthy. And being happy is as simple as connecting with others in a positive and meaningful way.
Coit Tower is in good company as New York’s Empire State Building also will be bathed in yellow lights this evening.
The lights go yellow around sunset this evening (March 20), and you can either gather at the tower, or head to Washington Square park, where there’ll be a viewing party.
