Located on the west side of Laxson Auditorium is a dedicated tree with a small plaque at its base that reads:

Alex N. Berthet - In Loving Memory

Always in pursuit of an engineering challenge,
he had a passion for excellence and an
excitement for life. An inspiring innovator
and builder, an adventurer, a mentor,
a laugher and friend; his spirit was huge
and his mindset will live on an be
part of us forever.

B.S. Manufacturing Technology, 2006
1981 - 2007

I was able to locate an online obituary here that reads:

Alexandre Nicolas Berthet was born in France on March 29, 1981 and came to America when he was six months old. Alex passed away in a tragic accident in San Francisco on March 17, 2007.

He shared his wonderful life with all of us for almost twenty-six years. His deep love and respect for family, friends and animals will never be forgotten.

Alex graduated from CSU, Chico in May 2006 with a B.S. degree in Manufacturing Technology. As an independent young man he worked his way through college and was employed at Valley Scuba, Glissade Snowboards, AVL Looms and was as TA for the engineering department. In 2004-2005 he served as Co-captain on the university sponsored "Super Mileage Vehicle" project and worked tirelessly on the Human Powered Vehicle project. In January 2007 Alex landed a job as a Mechanical Engineer doing SolidWorks 3D Modeling for a company in Vacaville and relocated.

Alex had a big heart for animals. He rescued and adopted a puppy in Chico and named her "Coby." "Coby" became the dorm mascot until she grew too big and noisy, and had to find a home with us in Pleasanton where she is today. Alex's smile and sense of humor always filled a room with warmth and happiness. He will forever be in the hearts of his family and friends.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 24 in Pleasanton. Contributions for Alex can be made to the Butte Humane Society in Chico, (530) 343-7917.
