The Cambria Iron Company was established to supply iron rails for the railroad networks. Construction of 4 coke blast furnaces and a rolling mill was used in the iron making process. It became the largest works in the US by the 1870's. In 1878 capacity to produce manufactured rods, parts for agricultural implements and wire drawing was added. In 1923 the Bethlehem Steel Company acquired the Johnston Plant.
