GEELONG POWERHOUSE
The Geelong B power station near Corio Bay operated from 1954 until 1970, when it was abandoned due to high running costs. The building then stood empty for many decades. At the end of 2014 the site was leased by Ian Ballis, who with a team of volunteers removed 30 tons of rubbish and set about turning the abandoned power station into a street art gallery. The 6-storey 3000sqm building is now Australia’s largest industrial street art space.
The project has been well received. Artists have creative freedom, and in the first six months alone over 350 local and international artists have contributed their work. The local community also gets to see the positive aspects of this sometimes misplaced "art" - over 30,000 people have visited the site in just the first few months.
The smaller artwork changes and evolves on a daily basis, but the large murals remain as showpieces.
MARK TAYLOR MURAL
This large mural on the northern end of the power station depicts a woman with beauty and heart. It took artist Mark Taylor 17 full days on a cherry-picker lift to complete it. He encapsulated his inspiration as follows:
"She wasn't hiding from anything as all else had thought, she simply needed to escape. Escape the torment of the confines of her soul, her very being, everything that meant something to her, deep down where most fear to tread. She lay. Softly. Still. The water surrounding her wasn't covering her, it was embracing. The waves being arms of comfort, and the current a heart beat. Constantly moving, carressing her entire being. She could only dream of such love, such perfection, such freedom, within herself, by herself. As the outside world was not at an intellectual level to understand."
