MINOR'S HILL
To the northwest is
Minor’s Hill, so called
for George Minor who
lived on the far side at
the time of the Revolu-
tion. It is the highest
elevation in the County.
In the fall of 1861, it
was the site of a Confed-
erate outpost. Afterwards
there was a Federal sig-
nal station at the top
of the hill. Here at the
foot of the hill was a
large cantonment housing
the reserve force sup-
porting the Federal out-
posts in Fairfax County.
This monument was erected by Arlington County, and is located in
the Williamsburg neighborhood. The small park is nicely maintained
and includes a paved parking area, benches in a garden setting, and
a picnic area. The placename "Minor's Hill" is occasionally
recorded in documents incorrectly as "Miner's Hill."
Please be careful of traffic along North Powhatan Street. If
you are turning left into the park as you drive northwest,
approaching traffic may be obscured by a rise in the road.
