Post-WWII there was a worldwide shortage of building materials. Many of the huts on the Australian-controlled Manus Island military base were dismantled in the 1950s and sent to Australia for civilian use.
This particular installation is based on the standard 40-by-100-foot structure originally developed for the US Navy. It is now used as a utility warehouse by BECS, a community support group.
Additions: Many extra windows were engineered onto the eastern side, and multiple chimneys installed.
Hut Type: Utility Building - "Elephant Hut"
Year of fabrication (if known): 1940s
Is the Quonset Hut currently in use?: Yes
Physical Address: 730 Eureka Street Ballarat, Victoria Australia 3353
