Rod Ugarte pochází ze Španelska a príslušnící její baskické vetve získali majetky i na Morave v souvislosti s jejich službami rakouskému dvoru.

V roce 1676 získali Mezirící Ugartové, kterí léta vedli cetné spory s mestem, které skoncily teprve v roku 1710. Za dedicu panství Jana a Františka Ferdinanda Ugarte probehla prestavba zámku do stylu baroka. V roce 1723 znicil velký požár znacnou cást mesta i se zámkem.
